1. How is that you are involved with autism in Jozi?
We are a Early Childhood Developement and Special Needs Centre, specializing in the education and development of learners on the Autism Spectrum Disorder. We take a holistic approach to each learners’ educational and emotional well being.
We believe a human being does not consist out of only one dimension, we are social, emotional, physical, sensory and psychological beings. We strongly believe when all of the aforementioned is addressed an autist is able to be integrated into the society (inclusivity).

2. How can we as a community in Jozi make play more inclusive for autists?
– Development through sensory play.
Sensory play areas should be established at all schools, centres and could even be at shopping centres. If a variety of sponsors are available a soft play area at each shopping centre could be established with different sensory boards, texture boards and sensory play stations.
Sensory play areas could also be established with little funding. We spend on average R250 a month for 8 learners on basic sensory play items such as shaving cream, macaroni, rice, maize and paint. You could even just use mud, leaves, stones and grass to stimulate the various senses.
The importance of sensory integration should never be undervalued.

– Events should be Autism friendly, thus the autistic individual could play in an interactive environment.
Events should have a room and/or area that autistic individuals could escape to if they become over stimulated.

All of the above will be possible once there are more autism awareness and acceptance.

3. What has worked for you & your organisation to facilitate play in autism?
We almost always focus on the sensory integration of a learner first. Therefor determining the sensory problems if any; proprioceptive, vestibular, visual, auditory, tactility, olfactory and oral.
We then focus on it by means of different therapies and then mainly sensory play.
We do sensory play on a daily basis.
Sensory play to initiate communication: We mix different words/ pictures (depending on age of learners) with maize/ paint/ mud, etc. and the learner is instructed to find the words/ pictures mentioned in a story.
Sensory play during sports: We will create a mud field and play soccer/ netball/ rugby, bowling, etc. in the mud.
Sensory play with different oral textures: Learners are encouraged to taste various fruits/ vegetables/ meats.
We have seen immense development by making use of the learners own body (senses).

1. How is that you are involved with autism in Jozi?
Autism has always been a passion of mine, I opened a small Applied Behaviour Analysis therapy centre a few years ago and I have never looked back.

2. How can we as a community in Jozi make play more inclusive for autists?
I personally feel that the school/centre that your child goes to should be incorporating play into their programs. Once a child knows how to play they will be able to generalise this skill into their natural environment (Whether it is family supper at Spur or a walk to the park). If schools/centres incorporate the fundamental learning skills into the child’s curriculum, it would assist parents with increasing play skills at home as well.

3. What has worked for you & your organisation to facilitate play in autism?
We offer a very special approach to play which we have called Project Play. We teach play using Applied Behaviour Analysis techniques, but the focus is on the child’s Natural Environment. Using this method we have been able to improve children’s spontaneous play and language skills. We also offer social classes where the focus is more on group social games.

From a very young age my parents exposed me to different environments where my sensory sensitivity was stimulated. I experienced challenges on cognitive, emotional, social and physical levels.

I was enrolled in a mainstream primary and Remedial High school. When I matriculated my overall average for all my subjects was 70.2%, and I obtained University exemption. My school career had peaked, and my marks were excellent. After lengthy discussions about further education my parents decided to stretch me again, and enrolled me at the Groenkloof campus of Pretoria University. I stayed in the resident for two years and completed my Bed degree I four years (Bachelors in education) as well as my Honors degree in learning support within one year. I completed my Masters degree last year whereby I specialized in Autism Spectrum Disorder. My study was an auto-ethnographic study on my personal life experiences as an Individual on the Autism Spectrum and how the assistance of additional support helped me to achieve my goals.

I am currently a first year PhD student where I will share my experiences as a student on the Autism Spectrum in a structured environment such as Tersier institutions (Universities). The initial aim of this study is to improve facilities in University and in public schools so that the sensory needs of a child on the ASD spectrum are accommodated. My Main aim is to become an ASD specialist so that I can assist parents with children and children on the ASD spectrum.

Autism Represented

Unfortunately there were not many people who attended the event, despite ASA putting a lot of effort into planning and hosting it. We acknowledged too, that as symbolic as the gesture is, symbolism does not get the family in Eldorado Park, or Fordsburg, or Alexandra, or the many other under-represented communities across Johannesburg, the information or access to services they so desperately need. More tangible action is needed to reach more people regarding autism awareness and to advocate for better access to services in these communities. The following issues were identified:

Disadvantaged communities often do not have sufficient access to information or services relating to autism

Many people hold onto cultural and traditional practices which means that services to the child are delayed/with held

The common social misconception that the child that looks ‘normal’ will ‘come right’ with time, or is being naughty. These children at increased risk for abuse

Issues of poverty exacerbate barriers to learning/opportunities for these children

Running and walking was identified as a popular means for all ages to come together in support of a cause. The Johannesburg Zoo was chosen as an ideal venue due to the fact that it is a contained area, lending to increased safety for families. It was always important that the event be a family affair, that would be welcoming and accessible to everyone, especially where a member of the family has autism.

Stronger Together

A collaboration was formed between ASA, F.E.E.D, and the Caring Women’s Forum (CWF). F.E.E.D is the realization of the need to FEED, EDUCATE, EMPOWER AND DEVELOP. These goals have been the backbone of the organization’s growth potential as no member of society or within a community is left unattended. This non-profit charity and faith based group provides support regardless of religion, ethnicity or gender and without expecting anything in return. CWF seeks to advance the status of women worldwide by improving the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of women at the global and local levels through service and advocacy. With the generosity and collective action of South Africans and friends around the world, CWF has supported projects throughout the world, provided scholarships and awards to women around the globe, and been a powerful advocate for change in our local and international communities, thereby transforming the world and women’s place in it. The combined reach of the three organizations led to a successful first event in 2016, when 300 people supported the Autism Awareness Zoo Trot. Immediately after the 2015 walk, a core group of women from each of the 3 organizations committed their time and efforts toward creating a bigger, better, more effective event. Through discussions about the future direction and purpose of the event, Jozi 4 Autism was born.

In the end, despite the cold weather, and the very early start, we hosted close to 1000 people at the Johannesburg zoo for the 2nd annual Autism Awareness Zoo Trot 2017. People queued outside the zoo from 6 am for a chance to purchase the additional tickets we had to make available after our online tickets were sold out.

Exhibitors

This year we introduced something different, we opened up the event to exhibitors. Exhibitors could be schools, charities, or any other product or service that benefits people with autism. As it was the first time we hosting exhibitors, limited spaces were made available as we needed to assess the logistics and feasibility for future events. We had some incredible exhibitors including:

Nokuthula Center and Special Needs School

Matsea7 Equestrian Facilities

Volunteers

With the sheer volume of people supporting the event, we could not have pulled it off without the help of out amazing team of volunteers. These young people attended a worksheet the week prior to the walk to learn more about autism. The workshop was incredibly inspiring and we will write up a a more detailed post about that really soon.

Sponsors

We also want to take this opportunity to send out a heartfelt thank you to our amazing sponsors, who donated to generously. Our corporate sponsors were as follows:

Celltone

Reviv

Tibb

All in all it was a fun, family day. It was especially incredible to see so many families walking in big groups in support of a child with autism. Some families had bespoke T-shirts made, while others made stickers and banners. There was a spirit of camaraderie and a celebration of the loved one with autism, which was incredibly heart warming to see. Of course there were many areas for improvement, but these will be discussed and addressed, and suggestions from those who supported us on the day is most welcome. Thank you to each and everyone who supported this event, we hope to see you all again next year!
